The Joys of Celebrating Festivals

It is not surprising that Filipinos are saddened to find that festival celebrations are currently prohibited due to COVID-19 restrictions. Filipinos always show their bright smiles when it comes to celebrating festivals. It is one of the country's sources of joy. Sinulog, MassKara, Dinagyang, Panagbenga, and Pintados are among of the most prominent festivals in the Philippines, and they are held in various parts of the country. These are celebrated to promote each province's most popular products and to show gratitude to the patron saints for abundant blessings.

There are also a number of festivals held in Ilocos Sur every year. Ilocanos show their appreciation by participating in various festival-related activities. Longganisa, Kannawidan, Binatbatan, and Raniag are the festivals in the province, which are celebrated in the months of January, February, May, and November, respectively. The Kannawidan Festival was recently celebrated, and residents in Ilocos Sur showed their support by attending to the different shows and activities while observing the minimum health protocols. The Ilocanos genuinely value the different festivals, and despite the ongoing pandemic, they make every effort to show their respect and full support for the celebration.

For the Ilocanos, the celebration of the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival must be appreciated and revered as it commemorates the separation of the two Ilocos provinces: Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. It is difficult to put into words how much joy festivals bring to individuals. It is a time where we gather to watch street dancing and other competitions or showdowns. However, due to the pandemic, these activities are temporarily forbidden. In our own little ways, we can still celebrate and feel the joy of these festivals in spite of our current situation.
