Commemorating the Death and Resurrection of Jesus

As the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday is one of the most important liturgical days. Catholics received ash crosses on March 2, 2022, as the Church encouraged them to repent and believe in the Gospel. Lent has long been celebrated with reverence and sacrifice in the Philippines, which is regarded as Asia's stronghold of Catholicism. During the Lenten Season, or "Kwaresma," Filipino Catholics reflect on Jesus' suffering and resurrection. Various churches have different programs for prayers, devotions, and other religious acts to remember the life of Jesus Christ during Holy Week.

Lent is a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, abstinence, and other acts of penance in preparation for the celebration of Christ's resurrection on Easter. Lent is celebrated in a variety of ways by Filipinos. This includes Daan ng Krus, Pabasa, Viernes Dolores, Pagpapaligo sa 'Amba', Senakulo, Linggo ng Palaspas, Prusisyon, Visita Iglesia, Penitencia, and Paglilibing, the majority of which are in Filipino terms. Millions of people give things up until Easter Sunday as a gesture of sacrifice and to put their self-discipline to the test. Christians believe that this represents Jesus Christ's sacrifice when he traveled into the desert to pray and fast for 40 days before dying on the cross for the sins of the world.

As Catholics, we must celebrate the Lenten season as a mark of respect for our Lord, Jesus Christ. He died on the cross to atone for our sins and to save humanity. People's broken relationship with God is restored as a result of Jesus' death. Therefore, this season, we must improve our self-discipline as a way of expressing our love to God and his son, Jesus Christ, and I believe that we each have our own ways of celebrating the Lenten season at this time of pandemic.
